A wildflower meadow can be a rewarding and easy to maintain.

For a nature strip we recommend the following recipe for success.

70% grasses = Structure
20% lilies and small herbs = Wildflowers
10% small herbaceous spreading plants = Edges*
*Nature strips which are longer and narrower than usual will require a higher percentage of edge plants.
Structure – Grasses are what provide the structure in a meadow, without grasses, your flowers will not thrive in the often harsh environment that a nature strip can be.
Grasses provide cover and support for your flowering plants. They will provide cover from harsh sunlight, help keep moisture in the soil and offer support for lilies to grow taller flowering stems.
Wildflowers – Typically, the wildflowers in a meadow will be predominantly lilies and daisies with a mix of other small herbaceous plants. Often these plants are annuals or will die back to their rootstock in the warmer months which is another reason why grasses are so important, otherwise there will be times in the year when you have large bare patches in you nature strip which are open to weed invasion.
Edges – Because your nature strip has a path on one side and a road on the other, it is important that your larger plants are not planted too close to the edges otherwise you will be constantly cutting them back. Planting low growing, herbaceous, spreading plants around the boarders of your nature strip will help reduce maintenance, ensure site lines and reduce weed invasion. These plants will eventually spread through your nature strip, filling gaps between tussocks but are small enough to not impact your wildflowers.
